TIPA HISTORY

TIPA started as an informal network of trainees from Youth Employment Initiatives Dar es salaam (YEID Project) organized and run by Open Mind Tanzania and funded by Forum for International Development (FIC). The project was enhanced by indigenous poultry trainings from Aquinus Farms Limited (AFL) which produced more than 500 youth trainees from both physical and online indigenous poultry trainings.

RATIONALE FOR ESTABLISHING TIPA

The United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples, the Convention Concerning Indigenous and Tribal Peoples in Independent Countries; and the Convention on Biological Diversity encourage nations to support protection, preservation and promotion of traditional/indigenous items including breeds and create opportunities for their commercialization. On another hand, members of TIPA have been attending different poultry meetings in local and international spheres, however, there has never been a formal organization for collective representation and voicing for Tanzanians Smallholders Indigenous Poultry Farmers. Thus, need for setting an association has to be enhanced.

GOVERNMENT CALL

President Samia Suluhu Hassan has been calling for Tanzanians especially youth and women to get involved with entrepreneurship and self-employment, and for poultry in particular as is the sub-sector employing many women. Therefore, TIPA Members decided to respond to that call by become job creators through improving skills in indigenous poultry production.

OUR WORKING MODEL

We mainly work is via members, stakeholders and partners. All activities are done by members, stakeholders and partners. TIPA is just a coordinator and connector of members, stakeholders and partners.

TIPA ACTIVITIES AND PROGRAMS

1. We strive to improve member’s farms, hatcheries, feed mills, online platforms to meet national and international standards.
2. We aspire to come up with production centers of Kuku Kizimba Model whereby individuals and joint production and selling points will be established.
3. Liaison with government to preserving by commercialization indigenous breeds available in Tanzania via Zonal Centers.
4. Come-out with a certification/recognize system of people who sell indigenous chicken marking “certified by TIPA”. This will eradicate lies in poultry business.
5. Trainings, Research and Consultancy on indigenous poultry.
6. Representation and Advocacy on indigenous poultry breeds.
7. To establish an accelerator that brings-out innovations in poultry keeping and commercialize them.
8. Partnership with local and International stakeholders in indigenous poultry.

TIPA MEMBERS ACHIEVEMENTS

1. Get recognition and membership at Poultry Association of Tanzania, PAT, Chama cha Wafugaji Endelevu na Mazingira, Government PS – Livestock.
2. Some members have created an online poultry keeping App; ‘Kuku Diary App’. The App provides trainings and virtual extension services and provides connection to the market. The App won recognition status from Vodacom Accelerator and Imbeju.
3. Through funds from FIC Danish we have managed to develop a special Curriculum to train indigenous poultry keepers physically and online.
4. Under the umbrella of AFL We received one expert of Poultry from The Netherlands who provides expert advice that spearhead for formation of TIPA.
5. Apply to SIDO for recognition in small feed mill industry.
6. Got opportunity to be subscribed in the new project at The Netherlands Embassy.
6. One member received an award of hatching machine of 8,000 eggs from business competition run by Tony Elumelu Foundation of Nigeria.

HOW WE REACHED CUSTOMERS

Our main reach is via social media, we also benefit from word of mouth, we connect via meetings and engagements, we send introduction letters to government offices and to stakeholders.

We supply our products and services all over Tanzania. However, we lack proper equipments, we deliver our products via bodaboda, bajaj, cars, IT, cargo vans, etc.

CONCLUSION AND RECOMMENDATIONS

Despite the potential of commercial indigenous poultry farming and its value chain, it is still on infancy stage and largely incompliant. Our poultry farmers are still small but they have a big heart and great vision to change the narrative. With the support from the government and other stakeholders the indigenous poultry subsector can realize its potential, and largely contribute to improve sustainable livelihood of smallholder poultry farmers and contribute to the national economy.

Similarly, Her Excellence Samia Suluhu Hassan’s government efforts to create employment to women and youth and increase production in productive sectors including livestock (7% GDP for Livestock, 2% GDP for Poultry) need to be given priority as it will help into reducing unemployment in the country. TIPA is dedicating itself to mobilize Tanzanians to embark into preserving and commercialization of the indigenous farmers.

Singamagazi (Singida to Mwanza), Ching’wekwe (Pwani, Morogoro, Tanga), Kuchi (Mwanza, Shinyanga, Geita, Singida), Horasi (Shinyanga, Mwanza), Black Australia (Mbeya), Morogoro Medium (Morogoro, Pwani), Nzenzegere, Ufipa, Pemba, Unguja, Tanga, Mbeya, etc.

2. Foreign Local Breeds
Njachama, Vishingo, Black Australorp, New Hampshire, Plymouth Rock, White Leghrom, White Sussex, Rhode Island Red, Brahma, Silk, etc.

3. Semi/local Breeds
Koroiler, Sasso, Tanbro, etc.
